These days it is not uncommon to have a large, sectional sofa located in the main living space of your home – the perfect cozy and welcoming place where the family can hang out and spend time together. This space is meant to be practical, comfortable and stylish, but how do you arrange a sectional with throw pillows and a blanket so everything looks amazing? Let me share with you some easy tips for how to arrange throw pillows and blankets to freshen up and elevate your living spaces and furniture.
How To Style a Sectional With Throw Pillows
Step 01:
Start with an oversized throw pillow (I recommend a 24”x24” cushion), in a plain, neutral shade and place it in the corner of the sectional where the two sectional pieces meet. For me, starting with mostly neutral colours creates a cozy, versatile and streamlined look.
Step 02:
Next, I like to layer in a 20” or 22″ square pillow with a lumbar pillow (rectangular) to finish off this corner. I love to use throw pillows that vary in colour, pattern and texture (colour usually being a neutral). Allow the pillow shades to blend and complement one another. Keep the colour tones in the same ‘colour family’ which means they pair well with each other and layer softly.
Step 03:
Over on the opposite ends of the sectional, layer another 24” square pillow with a slightly smaller 20” or 22″ square pillow in front. Because sectionals are usually large in scale, I love my throw pillows to be large so that they balance out the size of the furniture.
Throw pillows are a great way to update any sofa, sectional or chair in your space. It is amazing how new cushions can completely change the look of a room! By keeping your main pillows neutral in colour, you can incorporate one or two new pillows that change with the season (without having to replace all of them).
Step 04:
Finally, when I’m pairing a sectional with throw pillows, I love to add a throw blanket as the final touch to any seating area. A blanket adds an element of comfort and coziness to any space. Wondering where or how to ‘casually’ place your throw so it looks styled? I have a few options for you:
How to ‘Perfectly’ Place An Accent Blanket
Option One: Fold your throw and then drape it over the arm of the couch, or on the couch seat cushion with any fringe or tassels exposed and hanging down (extra texture and detail).
Option Two: For a more relaxed look, try bunching up the throw so it is a little uneven and drape it over the sidearm of the sofa. If you have a sectional with a chaise, drape it over the end of the chaise or square ottoman.
Option Three: Use a basket (we love our baskets at Gray House). Place a large, decorative basket next to your sofa and simply toss your throw inside the basket, leaving one of the corners hanging out over the edge. You can also pull the throw a bit further out so that it drapes on the floor slightly.
